Abstract

Abstract. Social media has become one of the central environments of adolescent development, shaping not only communication patterns but also emotional regulation, self-evaluation, and identity work. Its psychological influence is neither uniformly harmful nor uniformly beneficial. Current research shows that the relationship between social media and adolescent mental health depends on the intensity, type, context, and meaning of use. This article examines three interrelated dimensions of that impact: anxiety, self-esteem, and identity formation. The analysis demonstrates that passive, comparative, and approval-seeking forms of engagement are more consistently associated with emotional distress, whereas active, relational, and authentic participation may support connection and self-expression.
