INDUCTIVE AND DEDUCTIVE APPROACHES TO TEACHING GRAMMAR IN ESL/EFL CLASSROOMS

Abstract

This article explores inductive and deductive approaches to teaching grammar in English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. The study aims to analyze the theoretical foundations, classroom procedures, and pedagogical effectiveness of both approaches. Using a qualitative analytical method based on existing methodological literature, the article compares the roles of teachers and learners, stages of grammar presentation, and learning outcomes associated with inductive and deductive instruction. The findings suggest that while deductive teaching provides clarity and efficiency, inductive teaching fosters learner autonomy, deeper cognitive engagement, and long-term retention. The article concludes that an eclectic approach, combining both methods according to learners’ proficiency levels and instructional contexts, yields the most effective results.
