Abstract

Abstract: Contemporary issues in foreign language teaching (FLT) are increasingly centered around integrating authentic communication, cultural competence, and digital literacy to meet the demands of a globalized world. One prominent challenge is the need for authentic communication channels within the classroom, which has led to innovative approaches such as content-based and learner-centered instruction. It exemplify this by describing a content-based Italian course that utilized computer networks like Usenet and email to connect students with native speakers, thereby addressing the call for more genuine intercultural exchanges . The importance of cultural competence is further emphasized through the analysis of teaching materials. The paper investigates several textbooks, highlighting how cultural and religious content can be reflected in educational resources to enhance socio-cultural understanding, which is crucial for developing intercultural competence in learners. Similarly, the article underscores the role of foreign language education in fostering intercultural sensitivity, advocating for a shift from solely focusing on communicative competence to emphasizing intercultural communicative competence.
